However this "movie" seems more like an extended episode and (no spoilers) has a rather abrupt and unexpected finale. I am a big fan of the Violet Evergarden series. I think it actually might be a bit hard to follow.
If you liked the anime series, then this is definitely worth a watch. Still, that's pretty much the only disappointing thing about this film.
You'd have hoped that if they were going to make a movie, they would have chosen a storyline that would have better served its length. That being said, it can feel a bit padded. It's sweet, heartfelt, at times really sad and filled with melancholy, but in the end optimistic and looking hopefully towards the future. This could have been a two-parter in the series itself. Furthermore, the story also fits nicely with what we've seen in the anime. That's definitely more of a compliment towards the anime than it is a flaw on the movie's part. And it's actually quite rare that a movie version of an anime doesn't look better, but here I'd say they're about even. I found myself missing lines because I was admiring the details. The animation is at times so beautiful that it honestly becomes a bit distracting. The good things of the series carry to this movie as well. Its titular character is a former soldier who lost both of her hands in the war but is now nevertheless pursuing a career as an auto memory doll, a ghost writer slash typist slash secretary for hire. I want that.Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll is a continuation of the 2018 anime series Violet Evergarden. This entire movie is just a cozy atmospheric watch. Amy/Isabella's struggle with her self-worth as well as her reminiscing over her times with Taylor is heart-wrenching, and Taylor's determination to become a mail deliverer so that she can deliver the same happiness that Benedict delivered to her is genuinely wholesome. Both halves of the narrative are equal parts charming and moving. Speaking of which, the story of the sisters is just incredible. In that moment, Violet doesn't believe herself to be a loving person, but Amy/Isabella keeps insisting again and again just how much she's changed her life. That one moment where Amy/Isabella says that Violet is so kind only for her to reply with "I'm not, I'm just doing what I've learned" is genuinely one of the most powerful moments in this entire franchise. The entire point of this film is seeing how far Violet has come into her own, and we see how being kind and compassionate is just who she is now in this film. Yeah, I like this more than the 2021 movie. This movie is basically an hour and a half of gayness, sisterly love, and seeing how much Violet has grown as a person, and I love every bit of it.
